Happy birthday, Organic Sandwich Company!

Five years ago, Organic Sandwich Company started out as a vendor at the Boulder County Farmers Market, selling only three sandwich varieties. Today, their 16th and Pearl location is thriving, their second location on McCaslin in Louisville has been open two years, and an Organic Sandwich Company in Denver might be on the horizon.

Organic Sandwich Company is going places, and I was honored to help celebrate their birthday in style this week with restaurant founder Marcy Miller.

Boulder’s restaurant scene is rich and vital, but the business also requires a ton of passion and hard work, both of which Miller has invested in spades — and it shows in both the quality of the food and the smooth-running operation. Truly, Organic Sandwich Company is a local entrepreneurial success story, one which the Boulder Weekly covered quite well in an interview with Miller last week.

Amid a crowd of delis and sandwich offerings, Organic Sandwich Company is known for serving delicious sandwiches (as well as soups, salads and sweets) made with creative flavors and organic ingredients, sourced from local farms wherever possible. This dedication to “wherever possible” is not halfhearted, but 100% genuine. Check out the mural, which depicts some of the restaurant’s main suppliers:

Organic Sandwich Company is also passionate about homemade ingredients, meaning they make their own bread, pickles and spreads in house. Miller was even kind enough to teach the birthday guests to make her super-spicy, super-fine-diced giardiniera. Available for takeaway, that mixture of lightly pickled veggies lights up quite a few of Organic’s signature sandwiches.

Including — and here the great news — the Spicy Vegan! Previously only available by request, this vegan sandwich will now join the regular menu to celebrate the restaurant’s fifth birthday.

Seriously delicious, the Spicy Vegan ($9.65) is a knockout, featuring giardiniera, avocado, tomato, housemade vegan almond “feta,” and arugula with caramelized onions on a pretzel loaf. I’d argue it’s the best vegan sandwich in town, and one which this omnivore will certainly order again.

Two other sandwiches previously only available as specials are joining the menu to celebrate, as well, including the Turkey Smoked Gouda ($10.25) with roasted turkey, smoked gouda, tomato, romaine, and avocado aioli on a sourdough baguette…

…and the amazing Grilled Cheese with Cured Ham and Pickles ($9.99) with locally-raised cured ham, aged white cheddar, dill pickle slices, and house-made stone ground mustard on French country bread. Yes, they make their own mustard, and the results are totally worth the effort. Lookie.

Best of all, these new regular sandwiches are $2 off throughout the month of February!

The restaurant will also be running a social media contest where customers can submit a Sandwich of Week idea. Winners will have their sandwich made and win free food.

So whether you’re already a fan or have never popped in, I’d urge any sandwich lover to take advantage of these discounts on deliciousness in February, available at both Organic Sandwich Company locations — or for takeaway or catering.
